      Oooof I love a good think piece!!, here’s my 10 pence worth!, skateboarding can be both but they can be uneasy bed fellows!,skateboarding as a sport ie competition does work in a fashion but it’s so so subjective!!, case in point this years vert attack!,some would say Tom shaar should have won!!, fantastic runs solid trick selection buuuut Jessie won!!! Why? Well obviously Jessie is an absolutely amazing skateboarder but does he skate like Tom? Absolutely not,if you think of skateboarding as an art form tho and it being creative and about free expression like I do Jessie won easily, it’s all so subjective and over the years there has been so many conflicts about competition result ie hawk v hosoi!!, so although a skateboard competition can be kinda judged ie he or she did that amount of the latest trick it’s more nuanced than that maybe more artistic, in the regards skateboarding being an art form absolutely it is, skateboarding seems to bring together so many creative people with different interpretations of what is skateboarding it can never be pinned down to one thing!!! That’s what I love about it!!, there are quite straight down the line competitive skaters like jagger Eaton and there are skaters like Jessie Thomas all in this big melting pot!!, I certainly like the more creative free thinking skaters who follow there own path, in a funny way skaters who are a bit odd or different in there approach get the most credit from core skaters rather than say the more robotic trick based approach,I’m still skating because it’s a creative space ( and there’s always space for last place at the comps if I feel the need)

    I’m of the opinion that skateboarding exists in a weird super-position that can sit comfortably under both categories or art and sport. If you want to compete against another skateboarder you can do and we have plenty of ways to make that happen whether it be in competitions or a friendly game of skate. The same can be said for the opposing side, you can skate without competing and allow it to be purely self expression, using obstacles in weird ways, choosing weird spots, doing tricks other typically people don’t do or even putting your own spin on an existing trick. Its malleable to the user and completely subjective.

  • @langton666
    @langton666 2 месяца назад

    If a pro skaters in town they'll just turn up at a spot / park and skate for the fun of it. You don't see pro footballers in your local park having a kick about. To me that's the difference to "sport"

    • @TheSkateboardingShow
      @TheSkateboardingShow 2 месяца назад

      So, are you saying that high level skateboarders are more accessible to everyday people?

    • @langton666
      @langton666 2 месяца назад

      @TheSkateboardingShow guess so. Also with traditional sports, world champion or number one rank is regarded as best. Gaviin Bottger is currently ranked number one according to world skate. Ask any skater at your local park who the best skater is and I bet his name won't get mentioned or if they even know who he is.

    • @TheSkateboardingShow
      @TheSkateboardingShow 2 месяца назад

      So far, I’m picking up on the idea that you may not think skateboarding is a sport, am I correct? 😉

    • @langton666
      @langton666 2 месяца назад

      @TheSkateboardingShow it works as both. The Olympic "faster, higher, longer" mantra completely fits skating but the drive to skate seems more akin to the artist drive to create where a "trad" sports person drive is winning.

    Mmmmm what I love about these think pieces is there very cerebral and gets my clunky grey matters working a little bit,it seems to me that we need a bit of fear and adrenaline in our modern mostly sedate lives, it gets our juices flowing and makes us feel alive!!, my problem is my primitive bit of the brain I think it’s called the omiglier or something is on blink at the moment and I’m constantly anxious and on edge and it won’t switch off most of the time!!, how this manifests in regards skateboarding is I’ll go to the skatepark with a feeling of dread and anxiety even before I even get into the skatepark!!! I think you need a little bit of fear to keep you in check or I’d drop in and go for a 540 first wall and end up on the flat in a bunched up bone heap!! Buuut when I think mmmm I’ll go for a 50 50 ( something iv done on vert hundreds of times) my broken brain goes NOOOO I DONT THINK SO!! ARE YOU MAD!! YOUR GOING TO DIE!!! So I don’t try a 50 50 but knowing full well I can do them!!!!, other things of note!, in regards needing a bit of fear to fulfill my skateboard requirements, I’ll have an absolutely awful skate full of anxiety and frustration get home and start thinking that’s it I’m quitting and then a few hours later or the day after I’ll feel strangely happy I went skating even tho I felt at the time I got absolutely nothing out of it!!! My subliminal mind must have got a buzz out of me wobbling around on my board and getting scared and made it worth while!!!, oh and on another note who hadn’t taken a massive slam and then got up in disbelief that your not seriously hurt and you can carry on skating!!!, for a moment you feel invincible that you can take a big slam and carry on and it gives you confidence 🤟🤟

  • @UKTOOLTALK
    @UKTOOLTALK 3 месяца назад

    Mmmmm more food for thought, my failure percentage over the last 25 years in skateboarding has been 80 to 90%, I’m not being negative or asking for sympathy most of the time my head won’t let me land or progress with tricks, let’s say I go to the vert ramp tonight and try and practice frontside grinds (I haven’t done one on a vert ramp for 4 years ish) I could go for a hundred attempts and not get anywhere near a grind!! Not even an incling about it at all even tho iv done probably hundreds in the past,I won’t actually try a hundred because after say 20 attempts it seems so pointy give up, I’d be so so stoked to session a trick and get closer to it after a dozen goes!! I’d be buzzing!!! But my head goes NO YOUR NOT DOING THAT EVER AGAIN SO DONT EVEN TRY!!!! Actually fun fact iv currently been taking beater blockers for my anxiety and they are helping my vert skating a tiny little bit, anyway where was I? Oh yes failure is good if its about a learning curve but if the failures never seem to end it gets old 🤟🤟

  • @UKTOOLTALK

    Mmmmm food for thought, can I put in my 10 pence worth please, when I go down to the local skatepark ( outdoor concrete free affair) and I’m all padded up to the hilt I don’t feel rebellious I just feel like some old gadge wobbling and flailing about and it’s all the kids and young adults darting about shouting and swearing and smoking weed who are trying to rebellious, even tho it’s a public park the local skaters make it there park or there place!sort of the same as a street spot, it can be a edgy place especially for young kids but I bet it’s exciting as well, I imagine if a council official came over to check out the park he or she would look over to me and think look at that nice man with his safety equipment on having a healthy and wholesome time!!!, not exactly the punk rock attitude that skateboarding is ment to be about!!!!

    • @TheSkateboardingShow
      @TheSkateboardingShow 3 месяца назад

      I hear that. But when that “punk rock” attitude becomes the norm, than to wear pads could be seen as being rebellious. Just an idea. I’m not stuck on that, just a thought
